Overview

Glorya located on the north side of Varnum Street, between 2nd Street and Rock Creek Church Road, in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest, Washington, DC.

The neighborhood has good accessibility, with various primary streets and avenues for vehicular traffic providing convenient access to the central business district. The 16th Street corridor is a primary north-south thoroughfare. Surrounding streets include 14th Street and Georgia Avenue, which are primary north-south arterial streets within the subject neighborhood while Military Road and Missouri Avenue are primary east-west arterial connectors.

There are 3 Metro Stations serving the area – the Georgia Avenue/Petworth is located approximately 0.75 miles southwest, Fort Totten is located approximately 0.8 miles northeast of  the Glorya and the Takoma Stop is approximately 2.2 miles north of the subject. The area seems to have seen the major thrust in its development during the early 1900’s. The area is an ideal residential community since it lies between 16th Street and North Capitol Street, which along with Georgia Avenue and 14th Street, continue to be major north/south arterials from the business and government centers downtown, to the residential areas in the northern section of the city and, in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties.

Police and fire protection are both felt to be adequate and readily available in the community and the area benefits from good service from public transportation. A number of the city’s health care facilities cover substantial acreage east and north of the defined neighborhood boundaries. They
include the former Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, U.S. Soldier’s and Airmen’s Home, Veterans Administration Hospital, Washington Hospital Center, Children’s Hospital and the National Rehabilitation Hospital. The Takoma Recreation Center is located approximately 2 miles northeast of the subject.
